All About Japan

All About Japan is an ideal introduction to understanding Japanese culture that shows the Japanese way of life through the eyes and words of children. Richly illustrated with full-color photographs of people and places, adults and children alike will enjoy following along with the two young friends as they share their insider's view of Japan.

At the beginning of the book, we are introduced to 2 kids: Yuto, a 10 years old boy who lives in the village, and Momoko, a 12 years old girl who lives in Tokyo. Throughout the book, we follow them on their beautiful country tour as they talk about their homes, schools, families, how they like to spend their free time, favorite places in Japan, festivals, and many more. Your children soon will see that they have a lot in common with Japanese kids.

Book structure:

The book is divided into 4 chapters: "Introducing Japan," "Everyday Life," "Holiday and Celebrations," and "Language and Culture."

"Introducing Japan" gives us basic facts about Japan, such as its geography, the myth of its creation, and a very simplified walk through its history. In "Everyday Life," the children show us around their home houses, teach us about traditional Japanese food and show us what their regular days look like. In "Holiday and Celebrations," we can learn about a few Japanese traditional celebration days (for example, New Year and Children's day). The last "Language and Culture" chapter teaches us basic information about Japanese writing as well as introduces us to both traditional (such as calligraphy and ikebana) and modern Japanese culture (like manga and anime).

All of the chapters teach us about Japan not only through descriptions and stories but also encourage us to try out many things by ourselves. By following simple step by step instructions, our kids and we can learn how to:

- write a Haiku poem
- make Okonomiyaki, Onigiri and Mochi cake
- make a Nenga-jo Greeting Cards
- make an origami frog and samurai helmet
- do the traditional Bon Dance
- write numbers in Japanese

This is a perfect way for the whole family to have fun together.

- You are looking for new activities that you could do together with your children
